Eighteen-year-old fast bowler Adam Milne is among six uncapped players who have been included in New Zealand's preliminary 30-man squad for the 2011 World Cup. Jacob Oram, who is considering calling time on his injury-ridden career if he cannot make the cut for the big event, has also been picked.

Dean Brownlie and Luke Woodcock, who along with Milne got their first international call-ups for the Twenty20s against Pakistan, also find a place in the side. Canterbury's Rob Nicol and Central Districts' Doug Bracewell - nephew of former New Zealand player and coach John Bracewell - are the other new faces in the list, along with wicketkeeper Reece Young, who has replaced Gareth Hopkins for the Tests against Pakistan. Hopkins, who struggled through the India tour in both the Tests and one-dayers, failed to make the cut for the World Cup as well.

"A number of uncapped guys who have excelled domestically made the squad," chief selector Mark Greatbatch said. "We believe it represents the best one-day cricketers we have in New Zealand. There is genuine competition for places as we look to select final 15 for the World Cup and that's exciting."

The squad will be reduced to 15 players by January 19.

Squad: Brent Arnel, Hamish Bennett, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Ian Butler Grant Elliott, Daniel Flynn, Martin Guptill, Jamie How, James Franklin, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Andy McKay, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Shanan Stewart, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Luke Woodcock, Reece Young

Mortaza's experience will be missed - Siddons

News : Mortaza injures his knee again
Players/Officials: Mashrafe Mortaza | Jamie Siddons
Series/Tournaments: ICC Cricket World Cup
Teams: Bangladesh

Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons has expressed his frustration over the latest injury to fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza that has put him in doubt for the World Cup that will be held in the subcontinent next year. Mortaza injured his right knee while batting for his club Abahani in a Dhaka Premier Division League match earlier this week.

"A fit and firing Mash [Mashrafe Mortaza] was obviously our first preference for the World Cup and this is a huge disappointment for Mash and the team as well," Siddons told the Bangladesh newspaper Daily Star from Australia.

The final report of an MRI scan performed on Tuesday confirmed that there had been a near complete tear of the reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament graft on his right knee. Mortaza had surgery on his right knee in August 2009 after he injured it during the first Test against West Indies at St. Vincent in July that year.

An ankle problem ruled Mortaza out for most of the recent home one-day series against New Zealand which Bangladesh won 4-0. He came back for the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe but said after the first two games that he needed more match practice to get his rhythm back. While Siddons was confident that the bowling attack would be able to cope should Mortaza not be fit in time for the World Cup, he said that Mortaza's experience would be missed.

"The inclusion of Rubel (Hossain) or Nazmul (Hossain) would change the dynamics of the opening attack but I believe that though it would be different it would not be weakened significantly," he said. "The loss of Mash will be seen in his leadership and experience. We cannot cover this aspect of his loss."

This injury is the latest in the long line of injuries for Mortaza. He has undergone six knee reconstructions in the space of eight years, and is currently undergoing a non-surgical treatment for his knee, involving physical therapy and use of a knee brace.

Ian Billcliff omitted from Canada's probables

Batsman Ian Billcliff is the only notable omission from Canada's preliminary 30-man squad for the 2011 World Cup. Ashish Bagai has been named captain and the squad also includes veteran allrounder John Davison who has been actively involved with Cricket Australia as a spin bowling coach.

Chris James, the chairman of selectors, said it was a tough decision to omit Billcliff, who has played 19 ODIs for Canada averaging just under 28, including three games during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. "It was an especially difficult decision for us when it came down to Billy (Billcliff). Internationally, he has been one of our top-rated performers. Unfortunately we were unable to line up our schedules with the preparation tours and we had to leave him out."

Canada have just completed a short tour of India where they played against several sides. They next head to the West Indies for the Caribbean T20 in January where they will also play a few 50-over matches against Antigua and Somerset.

"We are confident that we have found the right mix of youth and experience to represent Canada at the World Cup and build a solid foundation for the future of Canadian cricket," James said.

The final 15-man World Cup line-up will be named after their participation in the Caribbean T20 tournament.

Canada squad: Ashish Bagai (capt), Waleed Ahmad, Manny Aulakh, Akshay Bagai, Harvir Baidwan, Trevin Bastiampillai, Umar Bhatti, Grant Broadhurst, Rizwan Cheema, Khurram Chohan, John Davison, Parth Desai, Jeremy Gordon, Tyson Gordon, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Amabhir Hansra, Sandeep Jyoti, Nitish Kumar, Usman Limbada, Henry Osinde, Hiral Patel, Cecil Pervez, Balaji Rao, Manrick Singh, Junaid Siddiqui, Zeeshan Siddiqui, Zubin Surkari, Hamza Tariq, Karl Whatham, Zameer Zahee
