Test cricket is the real test of character

As the Pakistan Cricket Board ponders on holding its own version of the Indian Premier League (IPL), former Pakistan skipper Javed Miandad denounced the idea saying such a move would destroy the game in the country. We at zeecric.com bring to you the excerpts:Miandad said the IPL is nothing but entertainment and lacks quality."The involvement of too much money will destroy the game of cricket. It (IPL) lacks quality and a cricketer can never get the confidence he needs as a player. Even the greatest of bowlers cannot do anything about conceding sixes and fours," Miandad told the `Dawn`.The former Pakistan coach insisted five-day cricket not T20 was the real test of a player`s ability as there was the latter does not require players to showcase their technique.Miandad also felt Pakistan cricket was on a downward spiral and said the absence of quality opponents in the team`s schedule."One reason for this is that talented players are not being groomed properly. Also, we are not playing against high ranking teams and competing with the weaker sides which doesn`t improve your game.
"It is contesting against quality teams like Australia and India that your potential is truly put to the test But this is not the case at present," he said. Australia recently refused to tour Pakistan for a Test series due to security concerns, which was later rescheduled for 2009-2010.He came down heavily on the Australian players who played in the IPL at the cost of the pre-scheduled tour of Pakistan."It would have at least made it clear if whether their players had genuine security concerns or they were avoiding the Pakistan tour because they wanted to play in the IPL," he alleged. The cricketer, who has played 124 Tests, also lashed out at the PCB saying there was not a single person who knows the game."It`s an one man show in the team and the board."Miandad also criticised the Board`s handling of Shoaib Akhtar issue and said the pacer should not have been allowed to play in the IPL."There should be no compromise on discipline. The Board handled the issue so poorly that the image of the country has been tarnished. No country is now ready to attach importance to Pakistan. Mistakes should not be tolerated to prevent them from being repeated again."A tribunal, headed by Justice (retd) Aftab Farrukh recently suspended Shoaib`s five-year ban for one month so that he could play in ongoing Indian Premier League.

Dhoni`s batting sting missing: Lalu

IPL matches have found an avid follower in railway minister Lalu Prasad but he feels the sting in the country`s Twenty20 captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni`s batting is missing."Earlier, Dhoni used to bang the balls but nowadays he has curtailed his shots... Jada style maarne mein pareshan rahata hei (he has become style-concious)," Lalu said last night to questions."Dar se khelta hoga, kahin out ho jaiga (Dhoni might have curtailed shots for fear of getting out)," he said in his characteristic tongue-in-cheek style. The minister said he had been making time to watch the IPL matches.Dhoni will lead `Super Kings` against `Deccan Chargers` in a do-or-die match in Hyderabad today as a loss would all but end his team`s chance of making it to the semifinals. Dhoni`s brigade narrowly lost the match against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.Bureau Report

Flintoff doubtful for one-dayers

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff looks likely to miss June's one-day internationals against New Zealand as he continues to recover from injury.
Flintoff is nearly halfway through a six-week recovery programme after suffering a side strain, with the first one-dayer scheduled for 15 June.
"I've still got a few weeks before I'm fit," said the 30-year-old.
"I saw (England selector) Geoff Miller and (England coach) Peter Moores last week and they're not going to rush me."
Miller is set to announce the one-day squad on Friday, with a Twenty20 game on 13 June followed by one-dayers on 15, 18, 21, 25 and 28 June.
If he remains on schedule, Flintoff should have completed his recovery from the side strain by 19 June.
"I've not got a fixed date yet on when I can play," added Flintoff.
"I'm not sure what the chances are of me being fit for the England one-dayers .
"These things have a history of taking six weeks and it will be three weeks on Thursday since I did it."
Flintoff injured his side while bowling for Lancashire against Durham earlier this month.
The side strain injury came after Flintoff, who has not played for England since the 2006-07 Ashes series in Australia, underwent a fourth operation on his ankle last October Flintoff could make his comeback in the final few matches of Lancashire's Twenty20 Cup qualifying group or their championship match against Sussex at Hove on 29 June.
England play their first Test South Africa at Lord's on 10 July in the opening match of the series but Flintoff is not setting himself any targets.
"I'd love to be involved against South Africa, but I think I learned my lesson from last time, building up and trying to play against New Zealand and it didn't happen," he said.
"I'm going to see how it goes. I'd love to play against South Africa obviously, but I'm not going to build it up too much because I don't want to get disappointed again."

New Zealand cricket coach to leave next year

New Zealand cricket coach to leave next year
7 hours ago
WELLINGTON (AFP) — New Zealand cricket coach John Bracewell will step down when his contract expires in April next year, New Zealand Cricket said Friday.
"John has informed me that he will not be looking to extend his contract for another term and will instead pursue other coaching opportunities in cricket," New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan said.
Bracewell, a former off-spinner who took 102 wickets in 41 Tests for New Zealand, has previously said he is interested in returning to coaching English county cricket.
The 50-year-old, currently in England with the touring New Zealand team, coached Gloucestershire for five years before taking up the top New Zealand post in 2003.
Vaughan paid tribute to Bracewell, who has sometimes been a controversial figure for his aggressive style, saying he had produced some tremendous results, "most notably in the one-day game".
New Zealand Cricket would start looking internationally for a replacement.
"We currently have an extremely talented group of players with some really exciting individuals entering the international game," Vaughan said.
"I believe they have the makings of a very successful team, and the coach will be selected to realise this potential."
Although Vaughan did not refer to any candidates, former New Zealand captain and Indian coach John Wright is a strong contender. Wright is currently New Zealand's high performance coach.

Gavaskar steps down as chairman of ICC's cricket committee

Gavaskar steps down as chairman of ICC's cricket committee
11 hours ago
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Sunil Gavaskar has stepped down as chairman of the ICC's cricket committee.
Gavaskar, the first player to score 10,000 test runs, was chairman for eight years. The former India opener said he could not continue in the post due to media commitments.
"It is clear I cannot combine both roles and therefore I am relinquishing the chair," Gavaskar said in a statement released by the International Cricket Council on Thursday.
The 58-year-old Indian had confirmed his decision on Wednesday, the statement said, one day after chairing the annual meeting of the committee which advises on cricket rules and makes recommendations.
"With more and more cricket being played it has become clear that it is not possible for me to do justice to two jobs," Gavaskar said.
Reports said the meeting had discussed a potential conflict of interest for Gavaskar in holding both jobs.
The ICC said a decision on Gavaskar's successor will be made in due course.

Cricket Masala

Azhar curse to blame for Sidhu departure from England tour in 1996
A decade-old secret was revealed by the BCCI secretary who is said to have clarified that the departure of Sidhu from England in 1996 was caused by a swear word from skipper Azharuddin. Apparently, Harbhajan Singh is not the first Indian cricketer to be credited with a curse in the form of the words maa ki. Azhar is said to have used a Hyderabadi curse word which is very similar at certian players, including Sidhu. The opener then walked out of the tour midway during the Test series. At the time it was thought Azhar had insulted Sidhu by pinning a playing XI on the dressing room door. A 3-man BCCI enquiry committee came to know that Sidhu had been sworn at by Azhar.

Murali rules out taking 1,000 Test wickets
Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan believes it will be too difficult for him to reach 1,000 Test wickets before he retires. The 36-year-old has captured a world record 735 dismissals during his 120-Test career. But he said recently - The thing is it is too difficult. You have to be in the game for too long. I am 36 and want to retire when I am on top.
Hectic schedule for Vettori, McCullum

New Zealanders Vettori and McCullum were driven to the airport within five minutes of their IPL match finishing on Wednesday night to rush to England by Thursday morning to play a match on Friday. Vettori and vice captain McCullum took part in practice on Thursday, conducted a press conference and are currently prepared mind and body to be ready for the start of the tour match Essex. Vettori said - We left five minutes after the game. It was tight. But our franchise owners own the airport - so things got through pretty quickly.

McCullum says no comment to question on whether he has been paid for IPL appearances
In reply to a question on whether he has been paid for appearances in IPL cricket, the New Zealand opening batsman Brendon McCullm said no comment when in England. The chances are that the money is yet to come through because of the Indian foreign exchange payment procedures which can be tiresome. Still, the world media would be happy to present the other picture.

Sri Lankan media manager removed by Arjuna Ranatunga
Arjuna Ranatunga, head of the Sri Lankan interim cricket governing body removed the media manager Samantha Algama, allegedly for being too good with the media. Mr. Mendis said that Arjuna Ranatunga has told him to inform me that the SLC no longer required my service as media manager. Ranatunga has said that I was too good with the media and that is why I was removed. Algama, one of the longest serving media managers, said he was doing a honorary job from 2005 without taking a single cent as salary from the SLC.

Mumbai Indians remove all traces of Harbhajan Singh
The exile of Harbhajan Singh from IPL was complete after the Mumbai Indians removed all reference of the spinner from their official material. After the news of Harbhajan's suspension was confirmed, the team set about removing all trace of the spinner as advertising hoardings bearing his face were pulled down, while there is no mention of the controversial figure on the official website of the franchise. The official reason for the move may have been to avoid misleading fans by advertising a player who would not be making any further appearances. But there is no doubt the most expensive team in the IPL have been embarrassed by the incident.

History of Cricket in India

Hi frnds BCCI cricket board is the Richest Board in the World .History of Cricket in IndiaCricket is the unofficial national sport of India, and its development has been closely tied up with the history of the country, mirroring many of the political and cultural developments around issues such as race, caste, religion and nationality. Though cricket is indubitably the most popular sport in India, it is not the nation's national sport (a distinction held by field hockey). Cricket, like field hockey, was first introduced to India by the British. The earliest recorded match was played in 17211 by British sailors on shore leave. With the expansion of British rule throughout the subcontinent, the British took the game with them wherever they went. However, the early history of the game was focused largely on the large cities, particularly Bombay (now Mumbai). The first Indians to play the game at a high level were the Parsi minority in Bombay. Beginning in 1892, an annual match was played between the Parsis and the Europeans. In 1907, this became a triangular tournament with the Hindus fielding a team, and in 1912 a Muslim team entered what was for twenty years the biggest tournament in Indiathe Bombay Quadrangular. Among the biggest stars in the early years of Indian cricket were the four Palwankar brothers, Shivram, Ganpat and Vithal but particularly the slow left-arm bowler, Palwankar Baloo. This was particularly noteworthy as the Palwankars were from one of the untouchable castes. Treated as equals on the cricket field, off-field they often faced discrimination. This changed slowly; however, Palwankar Vithal did eventually captain the Hindu team in the quadrangular. The formation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 1929 led to a first Test match with England three years later. In 1935, the Ranji Trophy began; it continues to the present as the leading regional tournament in India, with each state fielding a team. The trophy was a deliberate attempt to avoid the communalism of the quadrangular tournament. The Indian cricket team has won one Cricket World Cup, in 1983. India also reached the finals in 2003, but lost to Australia. In recent years, Indian cricket has been marked by the intense and occasionally violent rivalry with Pakistan. Furthermore, there were several scandals related to match fixing and gambling, but these were not restricted to India; they plagued several different teams. International cricket in India generally does not follow a fixed pattern like, for example, the English schedule under which the nation tours other countries during winter and plays at home during the summer. Generally, there has recently been a tendency to play more one-day matches than Test matches.

BCCI to help sportspersons prepare for Commonwealth Games

Apr 22, 2008
The Board of Control for Cricket in India will help sportspersons in five disciplines to prepare themselves for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and a corpus of Rs 50 crore has been set aside for this venture with the Union Government. "We will have a meeting with the government at the end of this month or first week of May to set up a committee to oversee this. The disciplines that would benefit are swimming, archery, judo, wrestling and shooting, BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty told reporters on the sidelines of a function here on Monday night. "We will not be dealing with the respective federations but with the government," he added. The BCCI official said the initiative for this venture had come from former Union Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar. Shetty said the BCCI has also come forward to finance the training and participation of tennis player Karan Rastogi, squash player Aditya Jagtap and shuttler Anand Pawar as part of its policy to help talented sportspersons in other disciplines. "We are giving Rastogi Rs 40 lakh, Jagtap Rs 26 lakh and Pawar Rs 14 lakh," he added.

Players' earnings set to go over the roof in IPL 2nd season

MELBOURNE: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to scrap the $5 million cap on the players' salaries from next season onwards, a move that could see top cricketers earn as much as a whopping $15 million (Rs 61 crore approx). The IPL had put a cap of $5 million (just over Rs 20 crore) for the franchises this year to prevent the very rich team owners from splurging too much. But with the inaugural edition turning out to be a major success, the players are set to reap the rewards in the next season. "If we hadn't done that, I can tell you that our players would already be the highest-paid across any sport in the world," IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi was quoted as saying in a newspaper. "It will happen - if not today, then tomorrow. Because once the franchises have established themselves, it will be a free-for-all," he added. The report stated some leading Australian cricketers like Matthew Hayden and Brett Lee can expect a several-fold hike in their pays when they go back to play the next season after their short stints this time. Indian ODI skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who fetched the maximum bidding price of Rs 6 crore this season, reportedly told a senior Australian player last week that extraordinary contracts of up to $14-15 million were likely to be introduced by the next season. Hayden confirmed that players were up for a financial windfall when the next season of the IPL gets underway. "From what I have heard, some of the stuff (payments) this year could be just the tip of the iceberg," Hayden said.
